Universities in Australia are public institutions with the exception of two private universities (Bond University and University of Notre Dame).
Higher education in Australia is provided by ‘self-accrediting’ universities responsible for the quality of their own programs and degrees, and by ‘non self-accrediting higher education institutions’.
Australian education policy aims towards facilitating mobility between different types of education, e.g. MBO-type post-secondary education and higher education. It also means that an increasing number of universities are offering professional, non-degree programs (Vocational Education and Training, or VET).

Bachelor's degree is the first degree awarded by most Australian universities, The ordinary/pass Bachelor’s degree is awarded upon successful completion of a 3-year full-time program in the field of arts or science. Australian universities also offer combined Bachelor’s degree program, which covers two subject areas. These programs usually take 5 years to complete, and students are awarded a bachelor’s degree with 2 different majors.
A master’s degree is usually awarded following a 2-year postgraduate and/or research program after a 3-year bachelor’s programme (or 1 year after a 4- year bachelor's). There are two types of types of master's programmes: a research master’s based on research and a final paper, and a master's based on coursework, in which students take classes and also conduct thorough research. Research-based master’s programs are examined by external authorities and are usually studies by students seeking admission to a subsequent PhD.
Most non-university higher professional education institutions are not self-accredited, but they are under the supervision of a competent, relevant authority. Many institutions offer professional programs in the fields of art, theater, tourism, business administration and hospitality, music, religion and theology, and teacher-training programs.
In addition to bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas and Graduate Diplomas of 1 to 2 years are also available. The Diploma and the Advanced Diploma are considered a branch Vocational Education and Training sector or the Higher Education sector. In many cases students with an advanced Diploma as a higher qualification are granted exemptions in the related subjects in a Bachelor's course.
